How Long Should Your Long Run Be for a Marathon or Ultra?

One of the questions we hear most often from marathon and ultra runners is, “How long should my longest run actually be?”

It sounds like a question that should have one simple number attached to it. Twenty miles before a marathon. Three hours maximum. Thirty percent of weekly mileage. Half the race distance before an ultra.

In practice, none of those rules works equally well for every runner.

The right long run is long enough to create the adaptation you need, but not so demanding that it compromises your recovery and the rest of your training. Your current fitness, recent longest run, pace, weekly volume, terrain, injury history, and race goals all matter.

What Counts as a Long Run?

A long run is usually the longest sustained aerobic session in your week or training cycle. What qualifies as “long” depends entirely on the athlete.

For one runner, 75 minutes may represent a meaningful long run. For another, two hours may be a routine aerobic day.

That is why we prefer to think about long runs relative to your current training rather than assigning one universal distance.

If your normal runs are four to six miles, a ten mile run represents a substantial increase in training stress. If you routinely run 60 miles per week, that same ten mile run may not be particularly demanding.

There Is No Perfect Long Run Distance

Long runs are important, but they are not fitness tests.

You do not need to prove that you can almost complete your race distance before race day. The purpose of training is to prepare you while leaving enough capacity to recover, adapt, and continue training.

A good long run should improve endurance without wiping out the following week.

That matters because one huge workout does not create marathon or ultra fitness. Months of consistent training do.

Your weekly structure matters just as much as the longest number on your training plan. Choosing how many days to run should reflect your experience and recovery capacity, not simply how many sessions you can fit onto a calendar.

Progress From What Your Body Already Knows

One of the most useful ways to decide how long your next long run should be is to look backward before looking forward.

What was your longest run during the last few weeks? How did you feel during it? How quickly did you recover afterward?

Recent research involving thousands of runners found that injury risk was more closely associated with a single run substantially exceeding the runner’s recent longest run than with simple week to week mileage changes.

That does not mean every runner must follow one rigid percentage. It does reinforce an important coaching principle: large jumps in a single session deserve attention.

If your recent longest run is ten miles, jumping immediately to sixteen creates a very different stress than progressing from fourteen to sixteen.

Durability comes from gradually expanding what your body can absorb.

Should Long Runs Be Measured by Time or Distance?

Both can be useful.

Road runners training on predictable terrain often find distance helpful because mileage makes it easy to track progression and compare sessions.

Time becomes more useful when pace varies significantly.

A 20 mile run might take one runner two and a half hours and another more than four hours. Those sessions share the same distance but create very different recovery demands.

Distance Works Well When Conditions Are Predictable

Mileage can be helpful for marathoners running on relatively flat roads, especially when they are accustomed to tracking weekly distance.

It also gives athletes a practical way to build confidence around specific race distances.

Time Often Works Better for Trails and Ultras

Trail runners may cover far fewer miles during a three hour mountain run than they would on flat pavement.

Elevation, technical terrain, hiking, altitude, and descending all influence training load.

For athletes preparing for mountain events, trail running coaching should consider time on feet and terrain demands alongside mileage.

How Long Should Your Longest Marathon Training Run Be?

Many marathon plans include a longest run somewhere around 18 to 22 miles.

That range can work well for many runners, but 20 miles is not a mandatory checkpoint.

A runner completing 20 miles in under three hours experiences a different training load than someone who needs more than four hours to cover the same distance.

For slower runners, extending the session simply to reach an arbitrary mileage number may create more recovery cost than additional fitness benefit.

The goal is to arrive at race day prepared, not exhausted from repeatedly simulating the race in training.

A well designed marathon training plan should balance long runs with weekly aerobic volume, quality sessions, strength work, fueling practice, and recovery.

Should Your Long Run Be 20 to 30 Percent of Weekly Mileage?

You may have heard that the long run should make up no more than about 20 to 30 percent of your weekly mileage.

That can be a useful guideline for runners training frequently at higher volumes because it discourages placing too much of the weekly workload into one session.

It becomes less practical for athletes running only three or four days per week.

A runner covering 25 miles per week could easily complete an eight or nine mile long run, which already represents more than 30 percent of weekly mileage.

That does not automatically make the run inappropriate.

Instead of focusing only on percentage, look at the whole training picture. Consider recent long runs, frequency, total mileage, intensity, strength training, terrain, and how well you recover.

How Long Should an Ultramarathon Long Run Be?

As race distance increases, using race distance to determine the longest training run becomes less useful.

A 50K runner may complete long runs that look relatively similar to marathon preparation, with additional emphasis on trails, elevation, fueling, and time on feet.

For 50 mile and 100K runners, training usually becomes more focused on sustained duration, terrain specificity, climbing, descending, and nutrition.

For 100 mile and 200 mile athletes, attempting anything close to race distance in one training session is neither necessary nor practical.

The goal is to build enough endurance and durability across the entire training cycle that your body can handle prolonged work.

Effective ultra running coaching should account for the athlete’s race terrain, available training environment, experience, recovery capacity, and life outside running.

When Do Back to Back Long Runs Make Sense?

Back to back long runs place substantial training on consecutive days.

They can be useful for experienced ultrarunners who need to practice moving on tired legs without completing one extremely long session.

They may also help athletes practice fueling, hiking, descending, gear choices, and race specific terrain under accumulated fatigue.

They are not automatically necessary.

A runner who struggles to recover from one long run probably does not need another demanding run the next morning. Marathoners also do not need to copy ultra training simply because back to back runs sound harder.

More stress is only useful when you can recover from it.

Terrain Changes What “Long” Means

Ten miles on a flat road and ten miles with several thousand feet of climbing are not equivalent workouts.

Mountain terrain can add muscular stress through climbing and descending while dramatically reducing average pace.

Technical trails also demand more concentration and often increase time on feet.

For this reason, mountain and ultra athletes should not become overly attached to mileage alone.

The same principle applies to weather and altitude. Heat, humidity, and elevation can make a familiar route considerably more demanding.

Recovery Cost Can Set Your Long Run Limit

One of the best coaching questions after a long run is not, “Could I have gone farther?”

It is, “Can I recover well enough to keep training?”

A long run may currently be too demanding if you regularly experience:

  • Soreness lasting several days
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Changes in your stride
  • Poor sleep
  • Reduced motivation
  • Difficulty completing normal easy runs
  • Repeatedly compromised workouts later in the week

Long runs should support your training, not consume it.

Keeping most running appropriately easy can make longer training much more sustainable. The 80/20 running approach helps runners build aerobic volume while preserving enough energy for recovery and purposeful harder sessions.

Fueling Changes How Well You Handle Long Runs

Long runs are also where marathon and ultra runners should practice fueling.

If you consistently underfuel long sessions, you may mistake depleted energy stores for a lack of endurance.

Use longer runs to practice carbohydrates, hydration, sodium, and products you may use on race day.

Your gut needs repetition too.

Building a consistent approach to fueling while running can help you finish long sessions with more stable energy while reducing race day guesswork.

Give Every Long Run a Purpose

Not every long run needs to be longer than the last one.

Some sessions develop aerobic endurance. Others practice race pace, terrain, fueling, equipment, or climbing.

A trail runner might need a shorter but highly technical mountain run. A marathoner may benefit from a controlled long run containing marathon pace. An ultrarunner might use a longer outing primarily to practice eating and managing gear.

Before chasing another mileage milestone, ask what the session is supposed to accomplish.

Then choose the duration that achieves that goal with the least unnecessary recovery cost.

How Far Should Your Long Run Be This Weekend?

Start with what your body has already demonstrated it can handle.

Consider your recent longest run, weekly volume, race demands, terrain, training history, and recovery.

Then ask whether going farther actually creates a useful adaptation.

In many cases, the best choice is the shortest long run that accomplishes the purpose of the session while allowing you to train well afterward.

That may be 90 minutes for one athlete and five hours for another.

Both can be exactly right.
